From the 25th of September to the 1st of October, our commander, who had been for some time ill with a dangerous ataxic fever, experienced successively three such violent attacks, that for some hours he ws thought to be dead. There was not a moment to lose in giving him the bark, in large doses ; but as that belonging to our ships was of a very inferior quality, I shared with him the small quantity which I had brought from Europe for my own use. This medicine operated in a manner that seemed almost miraculous. It stopped this terrible fever, and in all appearance saved the life of our commander. During the whole course of this distemper, his physician, M. L'Haridon, was at once his comforter, nurse and friend.
